Connections, in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Correction, proudly introduces New Expectations, a groundbreaking initiative launched in November 2014. This innovative program represents a beacon of hope for pregnant women facing incarceration or house arrest for nonviolent offenses in Newark.
Designed to address the unique needs of pregnant women entangled in the justice system, New Expectations offers a supportive environment with 17 beds dedicated to their care. For many of these women, substance use has not only led to their involvement with the criminal justice system but also poses serious risks to their health and the well-being of their unborn children.
At New Expectations, women are provided with comprehensive support throughout their pregnancy journey and beyond. They have the opportunity to reside in the facility for the duration of their pregnancies and up to six months after giving birth. With round-the-clock supervision, residents receive essential prenatal care and participate in intensive outpatient addiction counseling at Connections’ integrated health clinic in Newark, dedicating four hours each weekday to their recovery journey.
Additionally, residents engage in parenting and life-skills classes, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of motherhood and independent living. Job-search training further empowers women to pursue sustainable employment opportunities, fostering self-sufficiency and stability.
A cornerstone of the New Expectations program is its commitment to preserving the bond between mother and child. By preventing immediate separation after birth, the program not only enhances the mother’s chances of recovery but also nurtures the healthy development of the child. This holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of maternal well-being and infant health, striving to create a nurturing environment conducive to both.
For women who successfully complete the program, New Expectations facilitates a seamless transition to permanent housing, ensuring continued stability and support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
New Expectations is not just a program; it’s a lifeline for pregnant women seeking redemption, rehabilitation, and a fresh start. Through compassionate care, comprehensive services, and unwavering dedication, Connections remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals and families, fostering resilience and hope in our communities.
